Cardiff Community Housing Association - Longcross Street, Cardiff

This recent project in Longcross Street, Cardiff, has transformed the location by providing a new five-storey apartment block for Cardiff Community Housing Association. The development delivers 32 much-needed one and two-bedroom flats, creating high-quality social housing in a well-connected urban location.

Before the project, the site offered an opportunity to improve the street's character and provide new homes where they are needed. Our role as architects was to design a building that made effective use of the site while responding carefully to its surroundings, the needs of future residents and the long-term requirements of the client.

The completed apartment block provides modern, practical and energy-efficient accommodation, with each flat achieving an EPC energy rating of ‘A’. This supports lower energy use, improved comfort and more sustainable living for residents. The five-storey form gives the development a strong civic presence, helping to repair and enhance the streetscape.

For Cardiff Community Housing Association, the project provides valuable new social housing that benefits the local community. It demonstrates how thoughtful architectural design can transform an urban site in Cardiff into attractive, sustainable and much-needed homes.

  • The Longcross Street apartments have been designed as sustainable new housing, with an EPC A Rating helping to reduce energy use and support lower running costs for residents. The heat pump heated apartments provide efficient, low-carbon warmth, contributing to a more comfortable living environment throughout the year. Good levels of natural light, well-planned internal layouts and modern building fabric all support the overall environmental performance of the development. By combining practical family accommodation with energy-efficient design, the scheme demonstrates how new build social housing can provide much-needed homes while responding to the growing importance of sustainability, affordability and long-term resilience.
