Romilly Park Road, Barry

For a couple who loves to cook, the original kitchen in this house was not a place to spend time in. This clever micro extension is just 1.2 metres wide, opening up the kitchen to provide an illusion of much more space.

To do this, we knocked down the internal walls around the existing kitchen and added a large window and glazed sliding door onto the tiered garden beyond, connecting both indoor and outdoor spaces.

Within a tight budget, the extension also included a small utility room, cloak room with WC and, Sarah’s favourite, a new pantry.

  • Sit down at the kitchen bar and you may feel as though you are outside. The garden spills down the steps and into the kitchen.

  • Client: Sarah & Tim

    Location: Barry

    Status: Completed (2017)

    Contract value: £45,000

  • “We've done a few building projects before, but this was the first time we'd used an architect, so we were a bit apprehensive. However, Dennis managed to develop a vision for the extension and remodelling of part of our house that we would never have dreamt up without him. He took our basic ideas and practical requirements and fitted everything we wanted into a beautiful, clean, open space that unites our kitchen, dining room, utility room, cloakroom and garden seamlessly. Importantly for us, it has enhanced our 1937 house without destroying the integrity of the original design that we love. His plans were extremely detailed, so everyone knew what was expected, and he visited regularly to make sure the project was progressing as planned, and to solve any issues that arose. He dealt sensitively with the local authority building department in order to achieve the desired look, whilst conforming fully with all building regulations. We are thrilled with the result.”
